On Monday, October 22nd at 7pm in Franklin Patterson Hall of Hampshire College the attorney who broke the front page New York Times series about the danger of Eli Lilly’s best selling drug Zyprexa will be speaking to the public. Attorney Jim Gottstein subpoenaed Dr. David Egilman, an expert witness in the massive Zyprexa Products Liability case in Brooklyn Federal court to produce what have become known as the Zyprexa Papers. Mr. Gottstein turned the papers over to the New York Times and others, including Congressman Henry Waxman, National Public Radio amd Northampton’s Freedom Center co-founder Will Hall. As a result, the New York Times ran four major articles, including a call for a Congressional Investigation. Congress is now investigating, at least 9 states have filed Medicaid fraud lawsuits against Lilly, and $35 billion shareholder lawsuits have also been filed against Lilly. This event is sponsored by the Freedom Center (www.freedom-center.org), a local activist, advocacy, and support group run by and for people labeled with severe 'mental disorders.' The Freedom Center calls for compassion, human rights, self-determination, and holistic options and creates alternatives to the mental health system's widespread despair, abuse, fraudulent science and dangerous treatments. “We are honored to have Jim speak locally to reinforce what we at the Freedom Center have been saying for years--- it is not ok to force people on to psychiatric drugs and the dangerous side effects of these drugs need to be revealed to the public” says Keely Malone of the Freedom Center. Amherst resident Mollie Hurter says, “Jim is a hero to anyone who has ever been on a medication that made them sick for reasons the doctor never explained to them.” In addition to speaking about the Zyprexa papers Jim will be talking about work he has done (and is still doing) to make forced drugging illegal due to the fact that that the court can't possibly approve forced drugging with any of these drugs while important effectiveness and safety data is being hidden. Prior to Jim’s speech will be local speakers who have been harmed by psychiatric drugs and local speaker do local activism and advocacy around these issues.
